Help Haiti

There has been immense media coverage regarding the earthquake in Haiti and countless people have blogged and twittered about the tragedy in order to generate more attention and donations. I, for one, worry that all this media coverage will desensitize people to the situation in Haiti but I think this time, the news and pictures that are coming out of the country are so heart-breaking it may be actually spurring people to do more every time they read a new article or see a new picture.

Everyone should donate to help Haiti. I donated to Doctors without Borders as I feel that this organization is doing some of the most important work for the victims of the earthquake. However, there are many other organizations who are also on the ground and helping Haitians as well. Please make sure you check that you are donating to a reputable, government registered organization before you give money.

    1. There are some interesting articles on the situation in the New York Times, one on debt relief,
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/20/world/americas/20debt.html?ref=world and another on American role once the initial relief efforts are over, http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/18/world/americas/18policy.html?fta=y.
I think the crisis has put a certainly put a focus on the dire situation of the Haitians, with some news channels pointing out the fact that a lot of Haitians had lived in terrible conditions even before the earthquake. Perhaps this will mark the beginning of more developed countries giving more aid to Haiti but it is really hard to say at this point. It will take a lot of direction and money to rebuild this country.
