Metropol Parasol

The Metropol Parasol, a part of the redesign of the Plaza de la Encarnacíon in Seville, was completed in April 2011 after five years of construction. The structure is a massive honeycomb, containing an archaeological museum, a farmers’ market and panoramic rooftop walkways. The design principle behind the massive structure was to offer shade during the city’s long, hot summer months. Jürgen Mayer H., the designer of the structure, has said, “The form of this building was inspired by the vaults of Seville’s expansive cathedral — I wanted to create a ‘cathedral without walls.’ ” The breathtaking urban center is made out of cross-hatching timber planks on top of a steel structure. Metropol Parasol is the largest wooden structure in the world, and the only structure in the world to be held together by high-performance polyurethane resin.   How cool is this structure?? I feel the need to get up, pack up and jump on the next plain to Spain just to check it out… Solmaz   * Text from
